Mission-critical mobile platform for sexual health access in underserved Latin American communities

THE CLIENT

The Lily Project is a nonprofit founded in 2015 with a specific public health mandate: to reduce cervical cancer incidence (the leading cause of death among young Nicaraguan women) and to provide sexual health education to rural teenagers across Latin America and the Caribbean. 

The organization's operational model was built around in-person education delivered by trained facilitators. In 2018, political instability in Nicaragua effectively ended that model: a government crackdown on NGOs removed the operational conditions on which in-person delivery depended. The organization required a digital alternative that could serve the same population under the same constraints.

THE CHALLENGE

The population The Lily Project serves is defined by a specific combination of constraints that standard mobile application development does not account for: rural geography with limited and intermittent data connectivity, entry-level smartphones with restricted processing capacity, and the requirement that platform usage be completely untraceable (as a personal safety requirement). Women in these communities could face serious consequences from being identified as seeking sexual health information or professional consultation. Building a platform that did not serve these constraints exactly was not an option.

WHAT WE BUILT

Primero Group developed Chava from the ground up, treating each constraint as a non-negotiable design requirement rather than a tradeoff. Full user anonymity was engineered into the platform architecture: no usage pattern, access record, or interaction could be traced to an individual user. Low-bandwidth optimization was built throughout. The application was designed to function on intermittent and minimal data connectivity when connection was poor. 

Entry-level smartphone compatibility was validated across the device range the target population actually used. The result was a platform that enabled real-time access to health professionals for women who had no other route to that support.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Chava represents the furthest point on the Group's spectrum between commercial and mission-driven work. It demonstrates that the technical capabilities the Group applies to enterprise and commercial clients (constraint-driven architecture, privacy engineering, connectivity optimization) can be directed at problems where the measure of success is not revenue or efficiency but access and safety.
